Poems

Why I’m Missing Recess

There’s a trick that I can do
When I’m sitting, bored, in school.
First I stick my tongue way out
And try hard not to drool.
Then I twist it upside down
So the top is underneath,
And then I raise my lips up
So you can see my teeth
And then I cross my eyes
And point them at my nose,
And then I softly hum a tune
That everybody knows.
That’s when my teacher asked me
About the book we’d read;
Somehow my tongue got stuck like that
And this is what I said -
“Grgg ugh ur barg, ur gug lug gur
Bur ach ug lug dur frum.
Mur ahg ug dug lug mur dir glug
Dur dum er gag fur tum.”
The words I spoke made sense to me
They’re what I meant to say -
But not to her, and that is why
I’m staying in today.

By popular demand, I'm moving "The Ballad of Dirty Joe" from our archives to a more prominent place. For all those who have seen it performed and loved it, read it with delight. For all those who haven't seen Bill perform this poem, read it and try to imagine all that could happen. It's guaranteed to become a fast favorite.
